The Sound Of Silence

 

 

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I"ve come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was
planted in my brain
Still remains Within the
sound of silence.

 

여보게 어둠아 나의 옛 친구여. 자네와
다시 얘기하고 싶어왔다네.
왜냐면, 내가 잠든 사이에 어떤 환영이
살며시 다가와 씨를 뿌리고 갔거든.
내 머리 속에 심어진 그 환영은
침묵의 소리 속에
아직도 남아 있어.

 

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
"Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the
cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by
the flash of a neon light
That split the night And touched
the sound of silence.

 

잠을 설친 꿈속에서 자갈이 깔린
좁은 골목길을
난 홀로 걸었어.
가로등 불빛의 원광(圓光) 아래서
난 추위와 습기를 막으려 옷깃을
올려 세웠지.
네온 불빛의 반짝임 때문에
내눈이 부셨고
결국 그 불빛은 밤의 침묵의
소리를 깨뜨려 버렸어.

 

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that
voices never share
And no one dare Disturb the
sound of silence.

 

적나라한 불빛 속에서 난 보았어.
만 명, 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을.
그 사람들은 뭔가 의미로 다가오는
얘기는 하지 않은 채 그냥 떠들어대고 있고
그들은 귀기울여 듣지 않고 그저
다른 귀로 흘려버리고
우리 인간의 목소리로는 표현한 적이
없는 걸 노래라고 만들고 있어.
그리고 아무도 감히 그 침묵의
소리를 깨뜨리지 못했지.

 

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
and echoed In the wells of silence

 

"바보들" 내가 말했어. "당신들은 침묵이
마치 암과 같이 퍼지는 것"을 몰라요.
당신을 깨우칠지도 모르는 한 수
알려 줄테니 들어봐요
내 팔을 잡아 봐요. 내가 다가 갈게요."
하지만 나의 얘기는 소리없이
내리는 빗방울처럼
침묵의 샘안에 떨어져 메아리 쳤어.

 

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets
are written on
the subway walls And tenement halls."
And whisper"d in the sounds of silence.

 

사람들은 자신이 만든 네온 신에게
절하고 기도했어.
그리고 그 네온이 만들어 내는 문구에
경고의 메시지가 빛났어.
이렇게 쓰여 있었지.
"예언자의 말씀은 지하철 벽에, 그리고
빈민가의 벽에 적혀 있다"고
그리고 침묵의 소리 속에 속삭였지
